There have been many who sat by the side of sacred fire, hung themselves upside
down and got their skin removed bit by bit;
There have been many who kept on repeating the name of God until they lost energy
to speak, became dumb, and wasted their lives sitting in trance.
There have been many who kept fasts for days together and thus tortured themselves
with hunger;
There have been many who kept on bathing in rivers till their bodies got spoiled;
There have been many who went to the places of pilgrimage and gave away money
lavishly;
There have been many who pinned false hopes on graveyards and funeral places;
There have been many who went praying to places of pilgrimage, shrines and
mountains;
Even then, none could know Thy glory and greatness.
Who in the world is one's own and what does not belong to him;
Avtar says, nobody has been able to understand this without the True Master.

Meaning
Many sat besides the fire or hung themselves upside down or got their skin peeled off bit by bit. Many became dumb repeating the name of God and others who wasted their lives sitting in trance. Many kept fast for days together and tortured their bodies with hunger. Many who slashed their bodies by constantly bathing in rivers. Many went for pilgrimage and squandered their money lavishly. Many pinned false hopes on graveyards and cemeteries. Many offer prayers at holy places, shrines and mountains. Even then, none could know Thy glory and greatness. What in the world is who’s our own and who's is not. Avtar says no one has been able to understand this without the True Master.
